Keiko Hiromi at Gallery Bauhaus, Tokyo

One of our friends, Keiko Hiromi, documentary photographer from Dorchester, has her work exhibiting at Gallery Bauhaus in Tokyo (Japanese language website).

Keiko's work from Jacques Cabaret features performance and backstage photos of drag queens, and is some of the coolest work I have printed in a long time.

Ron Rosenstock "Infrared" June 30th - Sept 4th. Reception July 31st 6-8PM

We are proud to announce the next exhibit at the Griffin Museum Gallery at Digital Silver Imaging. Ron Rosenstock's "Infrared" will be exhibiting from June 30 to September 4 with an artists reception July 31 from 6 to 8 pm. The Gallery is located at 11 Brighton St. Belmont, MA. (Zeff Photo is next door to our gallery)

Ron has been conducting international photo tours since 1967 (www.phototc.com) He specializes in Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Morocco, and the Czech Republic.

INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY

The first time I saw examples of infrared photography was in 1967. My photography teacher, Minor White, had shown a number of the images he made using infrared film. I was struck by the altered state of reality of each image. Black and white photography is an abstraction by itself, but using only the wave length of infrared, reveals a reality that we can not see with our eyes.

Up until recently the only way to achieve infrared photography had been with infrared film, a tedious and difficult process. With the advent of digital photography it is now possible to have a camera altered to become a dedicated infrared camera. All digital cameras come with a filter that omits infrared light. There is a company, www.precisioncamera.com, that will remove that filter and add a special filter that only allows infrared light to pass through it. Once that change is made, that camera will only be able to make infrared images.

Because of this new technological development, making infrared photographs is as easy as making any digital image. It's an opportunity to explore a different level of reality. The photographs along this wall were all made recently in Morocco and Iceland and were printed on silver gelatin paper by Digital Silver Imaging. These represent my first foray into the world of infrared photography.

The Islamic Republic of Iran - Photos by Randy H. Goodman

"The Islamic Republic of Iran (1980-1983): A Photojournalist's View"

Photojournalist Randy H. Goodman's photography exhibit on Iran, was recently held during a Rutgers University conference entitled "The Iranian Revolution: Thirty Years".

Ms. Goodman's photographs capture the spirit and struggles of the early years of the revolution (1980-83) and include a portrait of Ayatollah Khomeini, religious services, images from the Iran-Iraq war zone, demonstrations and everyday life. The show was enthusiastically received and Goodman is currently scheduling other venues for the exhibit, including museums and universities throughout the country.

DSI collaborated with Goodman to scan and print the twenty images. Owner Eric Luden assisted with the edit and was a consultant to the project. Randy had this to say about DSI: "Phenomenal work! I loved all of the attention to details and Eric and Jay's professional advice."

FACING PEACE – Struggles, Strengths, Strategies of Families Surviving Violence is an exhibition celebrating the strength of survivors of homicide victims, and showcasing the collaboration between Boston photographer Lisa Kessler, the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, and Lesley University.

The exhibition includes Kessler’s photographic portraits of families involved with the Peace Institute – a Dorchester organization founded to assist the families of homicide victims - as well as artwork created by the survivor families. Facing Peace shines a light on the broad, rippling effects of street violence and the survival strategies of families working towards peace.

The families participating in this exhibition want to be seen and heard. They are both struggling with and finding strength from the Peace Institute’s seven principles: love, unity, faith, hope, courage, justice and the f-word, forgiveness. They have rejected the familiar paths of retaliation, shame and isolation. They want their murdered children to be valued, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the death, and for their surviving children to grow up in safe environments, recognized for their human worth rather than being seen as statistics waiting to happen.

They want their struggles and their strengths to contribute to building a culture of peace. The photographs and the exhibition FACING PEACE – Struggles, Strengths, Strategies of Families Surviving Violence are a collective strategy, part of creating a vision and a forum for action that is larger than any of us as individuals, families or institutions.

About the Artist:
Lisa Kessler is a Boston based photographer whose photographs and short film have been recognized by the Honickman Foundation/Duke University Center for Documentary Studies, Pictures of the Year International, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Her work has been exhibited nationally and is in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She teaches photography at area colleges and works for editorial, corporate and non-profit clients.

About the Peace Institute:
The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute was founded to assist and support the families of homicide victims in the most difficult times of their lives. The Peace Institute has a fully integrated curriculum for all students that prepares them to deal with trauma and grief, build non-violence and conflict resolution skills, and commit themselves to peace work in their families and their communities. The Peace Institute is committed to restorative justice theories and building sustainable peace in our home communities.
