Lisa Garner Gallery at New England School of Photography
Tonight at 7 pm the New England School of Photography rededicates its gallery space to our dear friend Lisa Garner. Her husband Ron Cowie says this about Lisa and the exhibit -

The images collected focus on her connection to friends and family. This is not a comprehensive show by any means. The volume of her images is overwhelming. Editing was difficult in order to stay within budget. Lisa never liked too much to be spent on her. The beauty of her images almost defeat the sting of her passing. Thank you all for the love, support and, interest this year. I am humbled and grateful.Eric and I knew Lisa as a student at NESOP, a customer at Campus Camera & Electronics, and as a friend & fellow photographer. She will always be missed.

Eugene Richards at PRC
The PRC Boston Eugene Richards lecture was amazing. Powerful. Depressing.
Whenever I go to a PRC event it is kind of like going back in time 10 or 20 years. I went to photo school at New England School of Photography in 1984 & 1985. I worked in camera stores mostly - SBI Sales before it became part of Hunt Photo - and Campus Camera & Electronics - before in became part of Colortek and finally closed up. I was out of photo for a number of years doing hitech work. I missed the boom and made it through the bubble bursting but finally was laid off. I ended up back where I was and I am glad.
So when I go to a PRC event or an opening I see lots of people I knew years ago. They stayed with their photo careers and some are doing amazing work. Bit we all come out to see the really amazing stuff & people, like Eugene Richards, Elliot Erwitt, and so on.
The is the first time I have seen Eugene Richards speak. He presented two recent bodies of work - one of abandoned house & one of returning veterans. These were powerful images, even the houses. If you are familiar with his work can imagine the photos he would take of a veteran who came home with 40% of his brain physically destroyed. Or a man who lost both his hands but left the prosthetic off one so he could feel his babies skin.
Without going on about each image or trying to repeat his words, I will say my friend Eric Luden and I talked about the lecture the next day at the lab. Eric pointed out that "The Blue Room" work on empty houses was a two way departure from Richards previous work - it was in color & had no people. I said that after 30 or 40 years of photographing addicts, the mentally ill, his dying wife, etc. I guy needs a break!

The Islamic Republic of Iran - Photos by Randy H. Goodman
"The Islamic Republic of Iran (1980-1983): A Photojournalist's View"
Photojournalist Randy H. Goodman's photography exhibit on Iran, was recently held during a Rutgers University conference entitled "The Iranian Revolution: Thirty Years".
Ms. Goodman's photographs capture the spirit and struggles of the early years of the revolution (1980-83) and include a portrait of Ayatollah Khomeini, religious services, images from the Iran-Iraq war zone, demonstrations and everyday life. The show was enthusiastically received and Goodman is currently scheduling other venues for the exhibit, including museums and universities throughout the country.
DSI collaborated with Goodman to scan and print the twenty images. Owner Eric Luden assisted with the edit and was a consultant to the project. Randy had this to say about DSI: "Phenomenal work! I loved all of the attention to details and Eric and Jay's professional advice."

NIK Software seminar

MARKETING WORKSHOP with Mary Virginia Swanson
Some details below on a workshop with Mary Virginia Swanson. For those who don't know Swannie, she is an amazing person to work with. Her knowledge of photography, galleries, portfolio reviews is unsurpassed. Swannie has given great advice in seminars at the PRC and to many local photogs in one-on-one consultations. She'll get you to focus on the pieces that matter and really get you on track.
The Center for Creative Photography in Tuscan is another amazing rescource. Their outstanding collection can be viewed up close and personal ( but no touching the photos ). Appointments are necessary.
From the CCP website - "The print study program gives the public free and unprecedented access (by appointment) to one of the world's largest photography collections. During the scheduled viewing, visitors may select and view photographs from the over 80,000 prints in the Center's collection."
I was there in 2006 and had them bring out some of my favorite photogs - Arbus, Winogrand, Avedon and David Akiba. Yes, you coulkd see their work in galleries, museuns and books. But yiou would be able to look under the matt and see the notes on the back! Really an great place to visit.

of the fine art photography market and how one can effectively target galleries, collections and publishers most likely to respond to their work. Participants will gain an understanding of presenting work to industry professionals via competitions and portfolio review events, as well as the value of attending Gallery Expos such as Photo LA and AIPAD. Examples of successful promotional tools with be shared, as well as selfpublished image catalogues and limited edition books. Ms. Swanson will share her extensive library of reference materials with participants.
Guest Instructors: artists Lisa M. Robinson (.com) and Ken Rosenthal (.com)
